The winners of the 2025 Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design were announced recently. A faculty team led by Zhang Jie from BFU's School of Art and Design won the prize for their project "SilkLines". Following their 2024 win, this latest triumph not only marks a consecutive milestone for the team, but also elevates the school’s profile internationally, demonstrating Chinese excellence in cultural sustainability through design.

Chosen among 183 winners from nearly 10,000 entries in 58 countries, "SilkLines" is a brand identity and packaging concept for the pipa. Centered on the "line", the design draws from the curves of Dunhuang's flying apsaras and Tang-era instrument shapes, presents four string-emphasized pipa profiles, weaves in Gong-che notation typographically, uses traditional Chinese colors, and adopts renewable materials.

By seamlessly integrating the instrument's cultural heritage into its visual identity, the project demonstrates how contemporary design can revitalize tradition while advancing sustainable practices.
