International Research Group on Wood Protection holds 57th annual meeting in Beijing

The 57th annual meeting of the International Research Group on Wood Protection (IRG57) was recently held in Beijing. Organized by Beijing Forestry University (BFU) under the authorization of IRG, the event brought together experts, industry representatives, and students from around the world to discuss wood protection technology and sustainable development.

BFU President Li Zhaohu noted at the opening ceremony that the world faces major challenges such as climate change and resource constraints. Developing low‑carbon, renewable, and sustainable materials is a key priority. Wood, as a natural material, plays an important role not only in extending service life but also in improving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

The conference covered topics including wood biodeterioration, preservative treatments, wood modification, fire retardancy, service life, circular economy, and wood‑based composites. Two special sessions focused on bamboo and non‑wood building materials, as well as plantation wood, reflecting China's needs in efficient resource use and green building materials.

 

 

Participants shared the latest research on durability, biodeterioration mechanisms, green protection technologies, bamboo processing, and modified plantation wood. A field trip included visits to the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum, the Longshuncheng Beijing‑style Woodcraft Museum, and BFU campus.

The meeting provided a high‑level platform for global academic exchange and enhanced BFU's international standing in wood science and biomaterials. Participants agreed to strengthen international cooperation in fundamental research, technology innovation, and talent training to promote safer, greener, and more sustainable use of wood, bamboo, and related biomaterials.
