Headquarters of International Students:

During your first few days in China, have you ever met any difficulties or challenges in your life and study? If any, how did you overcome it?

Muhammad Khalid Afzal:

During my first few days in China, I faced some challenges, particularly related to adjusting to a new environment and adapting to cultural differences. One of the main difficulties was the language barrier, as I wasn’t familiar with Mandarin at first. Simple tasks like ordering food, navigating public transport, and communicating with locals felt overwhelming. To overcome this, I began using translation apps and took Mandarin classes provided by the university, which helped me gradually improve my language skills and become more comfortable in daily interactions.

Another challenge was adapting to a different academic system. The expectations in terms of research and coursework at Beijing Forestry University were quite different from what I was used to. I found it challenging to balance my time between studying, research, and personal life. To manage this, I sought advice from my professors and fellow students, and I developed a structured schedule to stay organized. The support from the international student community and the university’s resources also played a key role in helping me adjust.

With persistence and the willingness to learn, I was able to overcome these initial hurdles. The experience made me more adaptable and resilient, and I quickly found myself feeling more at home in China, both academically and socially.

Headquarters of International Students:

Studying and living in China, what impress you most?

Muhammad Khalid Afzal:

Studying and living in China has been an enriching experience, and what impresses me most is the incredible balance between ancient traditions and modern development. The deep cultural heritage of China, with its rich history, art, and customs, coexists seamlessly with the rapid advancements in technology, infrastructure, and scientific research. This blend of old and new has created a dynamic environment that fosters innovation while preserving cultural identity.

Another aspect that has left a strong impression on me is China’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, especially in forestry. Beijing Forestry University, in particular, is at the forefront of research on sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation, which aligns perfectly with my field of study. The university’s dedication to environmental protection, along with the government’s large-scale reforestation and green initiatives, shows China’s forward-thinking approach to addressing global environmental challenges.

On a personal level, the warmth and hospitality of the Chinese people have been truly heartwarming. Despite the initial language barriers, I’ve always felt welcomed, whether by my professors, fellow students, or even local residents. The sense of community, combined with the country’s vast cultural diversity, makes living in China an exciting and rewarding experience. This environment has not only enhanced my academic journey but also enriched my understanding of the world.

Headquarters of International Students:

How much do you know about the traditional Chinese culture? Did you engage in some related activities?

Muhammad Khalid Afzal:

I have developed a deep appreciation for traditional Chinese culture during my time here. Chinese culture is incredibly rich, with thousands of years of history reflected in its festivals, art, architecture, and philosophy. I’ve learned about key aspects such as Confucianism, Taoism, Chinese calligraphy, traditional music, and the importance of family and harmony in Chinese society. Festivals like the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and the Mid-Autumn Festival have especially highlighted the cultural emphasis on family, reunion, and gratitude.

I’ve also engaged in several cultural activities that have helped me better understand and experience these traditions firsthand. For instance, I participated in a calligraphy workshop, where I learned about the artistic expression behind Chinese characters. I’ve attended tea ceremonies, which gave me insight into the deep symbolism of tea culture and its connection to mindfulness and hospitality. Additionally, I joined my fellow students in celebrating traditional festivals, where I enjoyed making mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival and attending events with traditional performances, dances, and food.

Through these experiences, I’ve gained a greater understanding and respect for Chinese culture, and I’m always eager to explore more. These activities have not only enriched my time in China but also strengthened my connection to the local community.

Headquarters of International Students:

How do you evaluate the development and innovation of forestry in China?

Muhammad Khalid Afzal:

China has made remarkable strides in the development and innovation of forestry, and I am particularly impressed by the country’s commitment to sustainable forest management and ecological restoration. China has transformed from experiencing large-scale deforestation in the past to becoming a global leader in reforestation and afforestation efforts. The large-scale "Green Great Wall" project, aimed at combating desertification by planting trees in arid regions, is a prime example of how China is addressing environmental challenges through innovative forestry practices.

The integration of technology into forestry is another aspect that stands out. China has embraced modern techniques like remote sensing, satellite monitoring, and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to track forest health and manage resources more efficiently. These innovations are driving the country’s ability to maintain its forests while also promoting biodiversity and ecosystem services.

At Beijing Forestry University, I’ve seen firsthand how research is at the heart of forestry innovation. The university plays a key role in advancing sustainable forestry, with projects focusing on carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation. China’s approach to blending traditional ecological knowledge with cutting-edge research has set an example for other countries striving to balance economic growth with environmental protection.

Overall, I believe China’s forestry sector is advancing rapidly, driven by both a strong policy framework and scientific innovation, which positions the country as a leader in global environmental sustainability.
