International students discover TCM wisdom in Tianjin

From May 9 to 10, the "Experience China—Approaching Tianjin and Immersing in Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture" event, organized by the China Scholarship Council, undertaken by Beijing Forestry University and, and co-organized by Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, was successfully held.

Experience Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture: the Perfect Integration of Tradition and Modernity

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a jewel in the crown of Chinese heritage, is steeped in a rich and extensive history, encapsulating thousands of years of healing insights. Despite the progress of modern medicine, TCM has garnered widespread attention and recognition worldwide for its unique charm and practical value.

Professor Kan Xiangling, Dean of the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, delivered a captivating lecture on TCM culture to the international students. Beginning with the foundational theories and historical development of TCM, she vividly explained diagnostic techniques such as visual inspection, listening, inquiry, and pulse analysis. She highlighted specific methods like acupuncture for brain awakening, Tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage), and other unique TCM practices. Her presentation offered a clear and insightful overview of TCM's role in modern medicine. Inspired by Professor Kan, the international students gained an initial understanding of TCM's philosophical concepts and experienced the balance of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements.

Experts from the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine offered free consultations and demonstrated various TCM techniques to international students, who were then given the opportunity to personally try out several unique TCM treatments, such as cupping, acupuncture, gua sha, and pulse diagnosis. The students were impressed by the swift relief that both cupping and acupuncture offered, and they expressed substantial reverence for the profound insights and captivating charm of traditional Chinese medicine.

Under the guidance of instructors Li Xiankuan and Li Guohui from the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, international students an immersive field trip to the Medicinal Herb Garden at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. There, they were enveloped by the rejuvenating scents of herbs and immersed themselves in the synergy of nature with traditional Chinese medicine. With expert instruction from their teachers, they explored a variety of medicinal plants up close, assessing their shapes, colors, and fragrances to truly appreciate their distinctive properties. Beyond mere nomenclature and applications of the herbs, the students began to embrace the profound philosophy of "unity of humanity and nature" that is intrinsic to Chinese medical culture.

At the modern TCM Haihe Laboratory, students embarked on a innovative exploration of contemporary TCM practices. Guided by instructor Zhang Min, they were given a comprehensive tour of the state-of-the-art research facilities and laboratories dedicated to TCM. The visit offered them an unprecedented opportunity to witness the transformation of TCM from its ancient textual roots to its integration with modern scientific methodologies. They gained valuable insights into the scientific research and advancements at the forefront of TCM, all of which are significantly enhanced by modern technological advancements.

Finally, the international students engaged in a Moxibustion practical session, where they had the opportunity to experience how to make moxa sticks. Guided by their instructors, they executed several steps including pounding mugwort into fluff, filling, rolling, and compressing, allowing them to appreciate the artistry of handcraft and the medicinal value of moxa as a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. This experience highlighted the wisdom inherent in TCM culture and its dedication to promoting healthy lifestyles.

A Cultural Journey to Tianjin: Exploring History across Eras

International students found themselves captivated by the unique charm of Tianjin, meandering through districts that exhibit a blend of traditional Chinese and Sino-European architectural styles, and observing the harmonious interplay between Eastern and Western cultures. As they strolled along the historic "Jinmen Guli" cultural street, they relished various intangible cultural heritages such as Zhang's nut brittles (Guoren Zhang), sugar figurines (Pitang Zhang), stir-fried beans (Bengdou Zhang), and clay figurines (Niren Zhang). This experience offered them a more profound understanding of the rich cultural atmosphere that defined Tianjin's ancient streets a century ago.

The "Experience China" series offers a rich, multi-faceted glimpse into China for international students from different corners of the globe. Through their unique perspectives and languages, these students share China's stories on a global stage, and serve as bridges between China and the rest of the world, fostering cultural exchanges and integration, thereby contributing to the collective advancement of human civilization.

Reportedly, the event involved 46 faculty members and students from 19 countries, including Russia, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
